An artist’s interpretation shows how a 4.4-million-year-old female Ardipithecus may have looked. J.H. Matternes
Meet your mysterious relative.
Her scientific name is Ardipithecus ramidus, and scientists call her Ardi for short. She is ancient — her bones are 4.4 million years old — and is making scientists think about the distant past in a whole new way.
Ardi is an example of an extinct species that may help scientists understand how human beings evolved the way we did. She is a hominid, which means she belongs to the same evolutionary family as people. It’s not clear whether Ardi was a direct ancestor of humans.
Scientists have just published more than a dozen studies on Ardi’s species — and this is just the first wave. Ardi’s skeleton is so surprising that “no one could have imagined it without direct fossil evidence,” says Tim White, an anthropologist at the University of California, Berkeley, who has studied Ardi. (An anthropologist is a scientist who studies human beings and their ancestors.).
Ardi first started to show up in 1992, when scientists found her fossilized teeth in Ethiopia. In 1994, her hand bone was found. For three years after that, scientists worked to remove more of her skeleton, including her arms, hands, pelvis, legs and feet. She was believed to be female because she had a relatively small skull and small canine teeth. Between 1981 and 2004, scientists removed other skeletons of other individuals of the same species from the same area. They also removed fossils of other animals and of plants.
White says Ardipithecus looks different from any living primate, so it’s hard to get an idea of Ardi’s appearance by looking at modern primates such as monkeys or apes. Some scientists have believed that the common ancestor of people and apes resembled a chimpanzee, but Ardi shows that idea may not be true. Ardi’s partial skeleton that scientists have found shows that she could walk upright and easily climb trees and move along branches — traits more easily identified in monkeys or apes. It also shows that Ardi probably couldn’t swing from branch to branch.
“It now seems that the last common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans was much less chimplike than previously thought,” says Alan Walker, an anthropologist at Pennsylvania State University in University Park.
White and his team think Ardi probably stood almost four feet tall and weighed about 110 pounds. This means Ardi is significantly larger than Lucy, a partial skeleton from a different species that lived on Earth 3.2 million years ago. Lucy was also found in Ethiopia. Even though Lucy and Ardi came from different species, they are probably related. Scientists may be able to use information from Ardi’s discovery to learn more about how Lucy’s species evolved.
Owen Lovejoy, an anthropologist at Kent State University in Ohio, also thinks scientists can learn a lot from Ardi’s teeth. He says small canines — especially in the males of the species — suggest that the males rarely fought. Male apes with large canines often show their teeth when they’re fighting over females.
In Ardi’s teeth, Lovejoy sees the beginning of an evolutionary process that led to human beings. “This is one of the most revealing hominid fossils that I could have imagined,” he says.

Early P.S: I need someone to respond to this post so I can respond to theirs.
I think that Ardi is a major scientific discovery. I mean, obviously, but also in the way of convincing people of evolution. If direct links can be found between us and Ardi, Ardi and chimpanzees, then many people might think this adequate proof and believe in evolution. This would be a huge breakthrough, because it would be one less thing to argue about. This world does not need more arguing. I think it is very cool how they could figure out what she would look like. I also really like the anthropologist’s last name. Lovejoy… similar to Lovelace, which I also like, Jamie.
Ardi is a very special finding. Scientists that have been researching Ardi say that there is no actual evidence that she is a relative of humans. Although she is the most like humans, being able to walk straight and can easily climb trees. Ardi was brought from Ethiopia and is 4.4 million years old. Ardi helps scientists find out how we humans evolve. Scientists
are all so trying to find direct links between humans and Chimpanzees. Ardi is helping with this.
My response to Isabel's response
I agree with Isabel that we don't need any more fighting and if people believe in evolution this would help with not fighting. I also agree with Isabel that it is cool that they found out how she looks. I also think that it is very cool that they could figure out if she was a girl or a boy by her small brain and small canine teeth. I do think that some people will believe in evolution after they here this story.
I think that Isabel interpreted the importance of this discovery in a great way.
This is an amazing article! Hominids are really fascinating. Who knows what we may find next? I wish we could go into the future and see what’s evolved then! I’m guessing it will be the weirdest, coolest, most fabulous creature ever!!!
PS post: i agree with Daniella that Arti is a very special finding. she's amazing! if we could go back in time i would look for her. she'd be awesome! although i don't know what her behavior would be like.
My Response: 1 paragraph
HOLY COW! I didn't know that they still had fossils inside of the ground that came millions of years ago. I think this a great discovery that scientist found this ape/person Ardi. It is still not proven of which kind of monkey she was but scientist are pretty sure that she was a chimpanzee. So now they actually could give proof about the evolution process and how it happened if it’s real. The weird thing is that even though they proved well in a way she couldn’t be a monkey or ape, and also that she “probably couldn’t swing from branch to branch.” So I guess then she already was evolved, or is that more proof there was no evolution its all a mystery. I’m still shocked they were able to guess or find out her weight and height of Ardi that’s crazy and that she was a woman. I can’t wait to see the result of this discovery.
My Response to John/ Isabel: I agree to what John says to what Daniela thinks to what Isabel says. This is a response to Isabel M I think that there should be no more arguing because that’s what corrupts our world. So that’s the thing we need least people arguing and fighting, that was what John was saying when agreeing with Daniela. Also I agree to do John it would be cool to go back in time and look for her. Maybe they could create some time machine so we can interview her. She’d would be awesome I think her behavior would be a little wild. The reason why is because she is an animal and she wouldn’t know how to react to a bunch of people surrounding her. Ardi would be scared but she would mature over time “as she evolves.”
I think it is interesting that scientists found another type fossil that is human looking. I like how they are still trying to find out how humans evolved. The article reminded me of a different fossil that scientists found. That fossil is called the Ice man. I like how the scientist had an idea of how Ardi would look, and they are right how they said that it is not like other fossils they found. I wonder what they would find next?
My Response to the artical.
I think it is very interesting that a new species of hominid has been found only 18 years ago. When knowing we evoled from apes a long time ago. I think it's intersting that you can tell the Ardi from another by it's teeth. How if your canines are smaller they rarely fought. If there are larger then they were fighting over females.
My response on Joseph post.
I agree that this is a great discover. I thought he explain what he thought well. What he said was true about this could tell how it really happened. If Ardi was a desendent of us humans. I think it's weird that Ardi can't swing from branch to branch.
This passage is about an ape that scientists’s found in the year 1994. The scientists are trying to find out if the Ardi species evolved into human beings. It’s scientific name is Ardipithecus, and the Ardi that the scientists found was a girl. The scientists noticed that it can walk and climb on trees very easily and is difficult for them to swing. Well, what I think is that Ardi’s didn’t evolve to human beings or any monkey like species to.
I really agree to Naadirah how she found this interesting, because well, its interesting. I also like how they’re trying to find if its human or not because the scientists should find out stuff as soon as possible. I don’t think that monkeys could evolve into humans because it sounds kind of mythical and magical. I hope if they find anything else they could report it to us, and if they found out anything interesting I hope they could tell us. really want to find out other weird things about the world we live in today. -Ballamoussa Kourouma 6/7A

Response to Daniela:
I think that Daniela was saying what Ardi is all about. I think that Daniela did a pretty good job describing Ardi, although it was very clinical. I also agree with her agreeing with me.

About Isabael M's i think that we have the same idea. I think that Isabael had a very efficient way of sdescribing Ardi and she put many facts. Her blog was written very well too

(this was a very interesting article)
I think that this article is very interesting. I never would even think about how humans were millions of years ago. I would love to learn more about this. To me, learning about the differences about Ardi and Lucy would be interesting too. When I first saw the picture I thought that millions of years ago, we were apes. But when the article explained the differences I was surprised. I also think that it was awesome how scientists can tell if something is a male or a female, just by looking at the skeletons.
I agree with John’s response. It would be cool to go back in time and look for Ardi, I would totally go and do that. But I guess john is right, I would like to know if they behaved like normal humans or if they acted like monkeys. I also wonder if she talked in a different language. Or if she even spoke at all.

Wow it’s amazing how people are able to look at the skeleton, and be able to know if it was a female or male, knowing the average weight, and what the skeleton have looked like. It is also amazing that they have found Ardi, because she has sort of the same features as us humans. We know she’s not like an official human or ape. She is more like in between them both, so like a chimpanzee. When they said “probably couldn’t swing from branch to branch.” It can show that she didn’t have the features like how a monkey like animal can climb branch to branch and etc. The humans aren’t more likely to be able to climb branches. Unless if you’re really strong and have a good grip, but say the average human. You can see that Ardi is more evolved. It’s really cool how they found a skeleton of a different species but think that they are somewhat related. That they have somewhat similarities ,sort of.
I agree with Isabel M. it is a major discovery. I agree that if we had evidential proof of links between us and Ardi, it would show that the evolution would be believed in. I would agree to “This would be a huge breakthrough, because it would be one less thing to argue about.” Because it is very true, we wouldn’t have to argue of this and the evolution.
I personally think that this is a great step forward because we are closer to finding the missing link with Ardi. The missing link is what came before the first human and when did we start to evolve. I also think this is really cool because it makes people aware that people didn't just come into the world, we had to evolve from some thing or some on to be where we are now.
I agree with Kayla when she said it was cool how scientists were able to tell the gender of the skeleton just by looking at the canine teeth. When Kayla said she wanted to know if they talked, I would say they might have communicated with body language and/or calls that meant different things.
I think that Ardi is an important discovery. It shows how humans evolved over those years. Ardi also shows links between humans and chimpanzees. Ardi has some traits that humans have, and some that chimps have. Ardi can help people find out what early humans were like.
I agree with Isabel that Ardi is a major scientific discovery. It could stop some arguing. I also agree about finding out what she would look like. It is interesting that they can tell based on the fossils.

After i read this article, i was just thinking, wow. That's a huge huge discovery to make! Scientists are going to be studying Arti for years now. She leads to new ideas and new studies. Anthropologists are saying that now, with this new information received from her, you can tell that ancestors of humans are much more human-like then chimp-like. She was found in Ethiopia, and is 4.4 million years old. Scientists can study and learn so much more about history and the way people evolved from this new discovery.
My response to Naadirah/Isabel:
I agree with her that it's really interesting and amazing that they even found Arti's bones. There is so much land and space in the world, how do you know where to dig? You just have to start from scratch and work your way around. So it's incredible that they would find anything, let alone a piece of vital history. I also want to respond to what isabel said. i agree about how it's cool that they can know what the animal looked like just by seeing its bones. It is a huge discovery, and hopefully it will link to other things in history that scientists are currently trying to find out.
I find this article very interesting. I think it is amazing that to become what we are today, our ancestors had to go through many stages of evolving. It makes me wonder what hominids were like and when they started showing more human traits. Apparently this interests other people too, like Owen Lovejoy. He has study Ardi and says “This is one of the most revealing hominid fossils that I could have imagined. So Ardi is pretty unique. Because of Ardi, we are one step closer to filling in our chain of evolution.
I pretty much agree with Jaime. The discovery of Ardi is a very big discovery. Also she will must likely be studied for many years. Studying Ardi will solve more scientific mysteries. We will hopefully find out more about Ardi's behavior and what life was like when she was living. The only thing I kind of disagree with Jaime is that our ancestors are more human like then chimp like. I think at the beginning of evolution our ancestors were very chimp like, but as evolution went on they became less and less chimp like.
This article is about Ardi. Ardi is an example extint specias that can help scientiest understand the evolution of human being. This specie was found in ethiopia, ans they have found each piece of her bones separately.Ardi skeletons proves that she walked up stright like us! But she is seemed to be different from any living primate, and is hard to visualize her.
My responce to Joey. I agree that how scientiest now can give proof of the evolution. I don't feel that this is a mystery. The evolution of human seems to be from the actual chimpanzee, but I feel that Ardi was just related to the chimpanzee, and I don't feel we evolved from Ardi, like we might of evolved from the chimpanzee. It is amazing how from fossil. Scientist can guess weight and height.
I think it is really thought it was intresting how a chimanze could act and be so much like a human. Some people say its not true but by the looks of Ardi's fossil it really could be. Some animales like Ardi can walk on its to feet and clim trees. Also it has to be true because chimpanzes formed into humans.I think this is the most Amazing discovery yet!
I agree with sean when he says that chimps formed into humans just like us. Also that ait was intresting that a new species was discovered over 18 years ago.
Ardi might be a relative to humans. There is no evidence but her skeleton looks like it is humans. Ardi looks somewhat like chimpanzees also which people think we came from also so Ardi might be our actual ancestors. This would be one of the most major discoveries of all time because we would finally know what we came from.
Julia Candea 6/7E
I think that it is very interesting how we found out were we come from and how we have evolved. Ardi seems to help us get even farther back. It seems as if she was one of us because she walks straight she weighs about as much as a normal human being 110lb. I think that this is very interesting and I hope that we find out more about animals like Ardi because that way maybe we can see if we can find out more proof on how they are related to us for example what they eat or what weather they live in how smart they were and much more I think it is really cool that we found Ardi and how she is related to us. I hope we find out more.
I agree with Anthony this might be a relative to humans. And this is one of the most major discoveries because this way we will finally know what we began as and what we turned into. But I disagree with Anthony when he said there is no evidence except for the skeleton because there was also evidence from the weight of the body not only the bones and scientists probably found out more not only about the skeleton but the brain itself.
I think that this is really cool. I never thought that we would evolve this much.I think it is very interesting that a new species of hominid has been found only 18 years ago.I would love to learn more about this.
My response to kayla zr:
I agree learning about the differences about Ardi and Lucy would be interesting too. I also think that it would cool if They were related somehow but it would be very rare but cool.
Izabella Mertens
i think that this is very important to a scientist to find such a interesting thing. they know now what the life was back then for the adapting humans. i find it interesting that it was very easy to find and that it wasnt discomposed. this treasure they found was very interesting, its like they were humans and all the monkeys we know today are or might be like us.
i agree with nnaadhira and how she thinks itts interesting they found another human like fossil.
I think that it is amazing how we always thought that humans evolved from more chimp like animals, when really, we evolved from more human like animals. I think that scientists got lucky when they found Ardi. If they didn't find her, I would still be thinking that we evolved strait from apes. Ardi is 4.4 million years old. can you believe that? I found this post really interesting because i barely knew anything about how we evolved from apes. I wonder what else scientists will discover.
This artical is about the Ardi animal. This animal is a example of a extict animal. This animal was in the old times. This animals bones are 4.4 million years. This animal helps scientist understand how humans beings to evolve.
Owen lovejoy is an anthropologist and he thinks that scientists can learn more from this animal. I do agree to owen because I also agree that scientists should do more resarch. He wants them to do more resarch on the males. Not the females. The males fight withe there teeth. They only fight with there teeth with the female.
I think that it is really interesting that people can get so much information about something just by looking at its bones. Scientists can find out how they walk/move, what they looked like and if they were a male or female. They can find out the approximate size and weight through fossils too. I think Ardi is a big scientific discovery. Ardi is very important in helping us find out where humans evolved. Ardi may also help us find a new theory to the creation of people.
I can’t believe we are still finding new fossils that are millions of years old. We have already found so many.
I agree with Jaime. Ardi is a huge discovery. I also think that Ardi leads to new ideas and new studies. Ardi will help us solve scientific mysteries and after some time of studying Ardi, scientists will learn even more about her.
I thought the article was interesting. Also I do think that Ardi is one of our Ancestors. The proof that scientist got was good enough for me to believe that they are our ancestors. Like their skull being the same shape as a human skull. You never know if the next discovery might be about aliens.
Response to Anthony 6/7A
I do think this is a big discovery. Knowing that humans might be animals. That might make all humans related. The discovery that scientist made was cool. I hope they make more big discoveries

I believe that this is one of the most signifigant discoveries towards the Darwin theories. It is amazing that a fossilized species like this is still as complete as it was found. Also, it is interesting how there could be direct ties between homo sapien sapien and Ardi. It would show how the humans evolved, and how we could evolve in the future.
In response to a few peers, I agree with what Isabel has said. This may end all of the arguments that sparked between the creatonists and the scientists.
I apologize for being late with my post.
my animal is the white tiger, it is very long and is very ferce too! the white tiger can have blue or brown eyes, its stripes can be black or brown. the white tigers paws as an adult are bigger than a human hand, as a cub there habds hcan be as bigg as a small childs hand. there ears arre very round and stick out to the side. its tail is very long and is very expressive.
a white tiger mother is very teritorial for its self and her cubs. the cubs will leave at about 2 months after they are born. a male tiger is very territorial beacuse they want to protect themselves nd wan to have their own space and keep unwanted away. my animal is becoming endangerd because companys and farms are tearing down the lands and forest for agriculture. lots of animals that the tigers eat including white tiger are dieing also. hunters will kill thw tiger and white tiger for its fur and for Chinese medicinal properties.

I think that it is pretty cool that we have discovered Ardi and now people think that it is more likely that we evolved from chimps. I don't think that is true because if we did evolved from chimps, why do women have babies? and why are there still chimps in the world? I think that evolution dos not make since and for me to belive in evolution those questions have to be answered.
To respond to Isabel M.'s post yes it is a huge discovery and our DNA is linked to Ardi's I still don't belevie in evolution it is just drama scientists come up with. We need real hard proof that we ALL did evolve from chimps.
